Deep State & Local

Privacy Policy · Effective February 25, 2026

Summary

Deep State & Local is local-first by default. Report data and regulatory database entries are stored in your browser on your device. The extension interacts only with your own ChatGPT account in browser tabs that you can see.

What the Extension Does

Deep State & Local is a Chrome extension that opens new tabs on chatgpt.com and injects research prompts using your own ChatGPT account. It monitors the responses, extracts structured data, and relays it back to the portal at deepstatelocal.com for rendering into a report. This process happens entirely within your browser.

Data We Do Not Collect by Default

By default, we do not transmit your data to our servers. This includes property addresses, project descriptions, ChatGPT conversation outputs, report summaries, red flags, and recommendations.

The sign-in feature (name and email) is stored exclusively in your browser's localStorage. It never leaves your device in the current release. There is no active server-side account database in this version.

Local Storage Risk and Your Controls

Because data is local-first, clearing browser storage may permanently remove saved reports and local regulatory records.

To reduce this risk, the Reports page includes Backup & Restore actions to export and import reports as JSON. The Settings page also includes controls to delete local reports or reset all local DS&L data for this browser profile.

Regulatory Database

The personalized regulatory database extracts only public regulatory facts from report results: jurisdiction names, zoning district codes, permit type names, fee formulas, and links to government documents. No project-specific information (addresses, project descriptions, executive summaries, risk assessments, recommendations) is stored in this database.

This database is stored in your browser (localStorage/chrome storage). You can export and import this database as JSON in Settings.

Optional Contribution Setting

The Settings page includes an optional Contribute Anonymized Regulatory Facts toggle. Enabling this setting requires explicit consent in a modal that explains what may and may not be shared.

Important: contribution upload is endpoint-gated. Enabling this setting alone does not send data; upload occurs only when explicit consent is recorded and a contribution ingestion endpoint is configured.

Ingestion authentication secrets are stored in sessionStorage only (not persisted in localStorage exports) and must be re-entered in a new browser session.

Permissions

tabs + scripting: Required to open ChatGPT tabs and inject research prompts into your own ChatGPT sessions. The extension does not access or modify any other tabs or websites.

storage: Used to persist job state during research (which tab is running which module). Data is cleared when research completes.

host_permissions (chatgpt.com, deepstatelocal.com): The extension only operates on these two domains. It cannot access any other websites.

Third Parties

Deep State & Local does not share data with any third parties. The only external service involved is ChatGPT (OpenAI), which you access through your own account and are subject to OpenAI's Terms of Use.

Changes

We may update this privacy policy as the product evolves. Any changes will be posted at this URL. The effective date at the top of this page will be updated accordingly.
